Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are a type of polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) that cannot be synthesized in our bodies and must therefore be obtained from the diet.
EFAs work together to create eicosanoids and prostaglandins, the hormone-like chemical messengers responsible for functions such as regulating blood pressure, oxygen delivery, gene expression and regulating pain and inflammation.
The primary function of omega fatty acids is to maintain healthy cell membrane function which is required to transport waste and nutrients (amino acids, hormones, minerals, vitamins and water) in and out of cells.
Omega-3 EFAs comprise less than 2% of total epidermal fatty acids. Whilst they do not appreciably accumulate in the skin, Omega 3 fatty acids, particularly EPA, play an important anti-inflammatory role. Dietary supplementation of EPA/DHA can enrich long chain Omega 3 fatty acids in the epidermis, thereby altering the fatty acid composition and eicosanoid content of the skin.
Plant based ALA can be converted to EPA (predominantly found in oily fish) however the conversion of ALA to EPA and DHA in the body is very inefficient therefore a low intake of oily fish (less than 2 – 3 times per week) may put one at risk of inadequate intake of omega 3 and supplementation may be required.

The presence of Linoleic Acid in the stratum corneum ceramides directly correlates with the health of the skin barrier. Ceramides are a special type of lipid known as a sphingolipids, and comprise 40 to 50% of the lipids in the stratum corneum.
GLA is a type of omega 6 that is not widely found in the diet. It plays a mainly anti-inflammatory role in the skin and some studies suggest that it may be effective in reducing the symptoms of a number of inflammatory skin disorders including dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, and acne as well as improving wound healing.

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body, and whilst we may instantly think of skin when we think of collagen, it is also an integral component in bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, blood vessels and connective tissue.
The decline of collagen production can start as early as our thirties, and progressively worsen due to general aging and diminished nutrient absorption.
Collagen and elastin fibres within our bodies also begin to reduce flexibility over time and can become glycated or stiffer. The acceleration of this glycation can be influenced by factors such as poor diet, stress, high blood sugar and excess alcohol.
Do collagen supplements put collagen back in the skin?
Contrary to popular belief, collagen, once ingested does not get magically transported to the skin and attach to existing collagen. It is a lot more complex than that. Collagen is a large molecule, approximately 300k Daltons in size meaning that the collagen molecule is too large to be absorbed via the gut and must first be broken down via digestion. This is how collagen is processed when we consume it within food, such as from bone broth and gelatin, in the same way that any protein from food is digested. These absorbed amino acids are then used by the body as required to build structural proteins.
Why not just eat a healthy diet?
In an ideal world if we are getting adequate nutrients via the diet, we would not need to take any supplements. ]]>People with fair skin appear to be more prone to rosacea and it tends to appear between the age of 30 – 60 in both men and women. The exact cause of rosacea is unknown and whilst it is not curable it can be effectively managed to help keep flare ups under control.
The skin's innate immune response appears to play an important role in rosacea as high concentrations of antimicrobial peptides such as cathelicidins have been observed in rosacea. Cathelicidins promote infiltration of neutrophils in the dermis and dilation of blood vessels.
The neutrophils release nitric acid which also promotes vasodilation. Fluid leaks out of these dilated blood vessels causing swelling (oedema); and proinflammatory cytokines leak into the dermis, increasing the inflammation.
Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) such as collagenase and elastase also appear important in rosacea and appear in higher concentrations. MMP enzymes remodel normal tissue and help in wound healing and production of blood vessels (angiogenesis). This may contribute to the thickening and deformity of the skin often seen in chronic rosacea. MMPs may also activate cathelicidins contributing to inflammation.
Researchers found that PACAP, a neuropeptide (pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide) a potent blood vessel dilator in humans, is 20 to 30 times upregulated in rosacea, possibly explaining that characteristic redness and why anything triggering vasodilation may worsen rosacea symptoms.

]]>When histamine is ingested from foods it can usually be detoxified by substances called amine oxidases, however if a person has low amine oxidase activity they are at risk of histamine toxicity.
The main enzyme responsible for the breakdown of ingested histamine is called Diamine oxidase (DAO). DAO is found mainly in the kidneys, thymus, and the placenta in pregnant women (which is why allergies often improve during pregnancy). When DAO is functioning efficiently ingested histamine is broken down within the digestive tract and removed before it can enter the body. When histamine levels inside the body become excessive, DAO, and another enzyme called histamine N-methyl transferase (HNMT) break down the excess. If DAO activity is impaired, histamine can accumulate to excess and may cause a number of adverse symptoms that mimic a hypersensitive or allergy type reaction.
Histamine can build up due to the ingestion of histamine-rich food or by food, drink or medications that either release histamine or inhibit the DAO enzyme.
Decreased DAO enzyme production and high histamine tends to be more common in people with the following: Methylation dysfunction, gut disorders such as celiac disease, leaky gut syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, dysbiosis and SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth).
DAO activity can also be inhibited by certain medications. Increased histamine may aggravate symptoms such as gastric stress, nausea, headaches, mood disorders, depression, sinus problems, skin rashes, eczema, rosacea, psoriasis, join inflammation, breathing difficulties, rapid heartbeat, rashes, itching, burning eyes, and flushing of the skin.
